A Neurological Presentation of Neosporosis in Calves
نویسندگان
چکیده
Neospora caninum is an important cause worldwide of abortion, stillbirth and calves born weak. Abortion is the major clinical sing associated to Neospora caninum infection, it typically occurs between months four to seven of gestation, but may occur from three months to term. Abortions tend to occur during mid-gestation and it appears that foetuses exposed in early gestation are more likely to abort and that foetuses exposed later are more likely to survive. Although most calves born to infected cows will appear to be clinically normal, there may be some neurological disease that is not readily apparent. However we present here an unusual presentation of the disease with recurrent neurological disease in the newborn calves.

First Report of Congenital Neospora Caninum Encephalomyelitis in Two Newborn Calves in the Argentinean Pampas
Bovine neosporosis is a parasitic disease of major concern in cattle industry worldwide. Although abortion is the more frequent clinical presentation, sporadic congenital clinical bovine neosporosis has been scarcely reported in newborn calves. Neospora caninum encephalomyelitis was diagnosed in two of 314 newborn calves submitted for necropsy and laboratory analysis between 2000 and 2014. The ...

There is no prospective study from Iran to estimate the direct risk of Neospora caninum for pregnancy loss or reproductive factors. In addition, there is no report in the literature concerning the association of N. caninum with dystocia and sex of calves. Therefore, this study was conducted on a group of dairy cows in a large intensive production system during 2011 to 2013 in ...
متن کاملNeosporosis in Cattle
Neosporosis is caused by the protozoan parasite, Neospora caninum. It is essentially responsible for abortion in cattle and various neuro-muscular conditions in dogs. Until 1988, N. caninum was confused with Toxoplasma gondii, a closely related parasite (Dubey et al. 1988a,b). In 1989, Thilsted and Dubey reported the presence of cerebral and cardiac lesions in several aborted bovine foetuses or...
متن کاملA clinical case of neosporosis in a 4-week-old holstein friesian calf which developed hindlimb paresis postnatally
A 4-week-old female Holstein Friesian calf presented with hindlimb paresis. Neurologic examination of spinal reflexes revealed depressed or absent reflexes of the hindlimbs. Menace responses on both sides disappeared on examination of cranial nerves. The calf was finally diagnosed with Neospora caninum infection by pathological findings including nonsuppurative inflammation associated with cyst...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Neospora caninum in dairy cattle from north-west and centre of Romania
Neosporosis is a disease that mainly affects cattle in both dairy and beef herds. The main definitive host of this parasite is the dog. Since 1984 and its first description a large number of data were published worldwide on this parasite. In Romania, the research regarding this parasite is limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum infection in da...
